conversation with patients volume 1

Real live conversation with my patient tonight....one whose last name I don't recognize from Joe Schmoe
I head in at midnight to give him pain medicine and check his vital signs. As I'm checking his blood pressure he notices my last name on my nametag....

Pt: Do you have relatives in Iowa?
(I'm thinking he must think I look like someone he knows....)
Me: No...but my husband's from Iowa....he has relatives there.
Pt: What's his name?
Me: (I'm thinking this is weird...where is this going....) Aaron
Pt: What's his Dad's name?
Me: (Ok...this is getting kind of personal...) Dave
Pt: Is he a veterinarian?
Me: (WHOA) Yeah, do you know him?
Pt: A vet at Iowa State, right?
Me: Yeah.....How do you know him? (I'm expecting an answer about some veterinary conference or something....)
Pt: Cuz I used to go to meeting...
Me: Ummm...oh....yeah?! (AWKWARD....what do you say to that?!....Bummer...how come you don't go anymore?)
Pt: Yeah....I know Dave and Judy....used to go to meeting in Webster City....(and he proceeds to list off a bunch of names of Iowa friends....)

And then we talk more about meeting and conventions on the east coast, etc....
WOW.....small small world...what are the odds?
Wonder what he's thinking now.....(well he's sound asleep so I'm sure he's not thinking about the conversation at this exact moment.....but do you spose some wheels are turnin?)
